More than a poet, Jacint Verdaguer (1845-1902), known as Mossèn [Father] Cinto Verdaguer, is a symbol of Catalonia. This popular Catalan priest, deeply committed to social causes, stood up to the Barcelona bourgeoisie to defend those in need. Not only did he become an icon for the working class, he was also a key figure in shaping the Cstalan Renaissance, or Renaixença.
A Romantic author who penned the epic poems L’Atlàntida and Canigó and the lyrics to one of the most emblematic Catalan hymns (Virolai, dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat), he was deeply devoted to his homeland, and shared his worldview through his poetry. The beloved poet (a million people attended his burial), the people’s poet, the Catalans’ poet: the revered Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer.
