‘Leaving the door open, cultural institutions as public spaces’, a conference at La Fabra
On 14 December, Fabra i Coats is hosting a conference entitled ‘Leaving the door open, cultural institutions as public spaces’.

On Wednesday 14 December, Fabra i Coats: Creation Factory is hosting a conference to exchange experiences about the processes of opening cultural facilities to the public. Entitled Leaving the door open, cultural institutions as public spaces, it will tackle the question from a conceptual, pragmatic point of view while also focusing on specific problems and tensions. The event ties in with the fact that the architecture of the Fabra i Coats building will be significantly modified in 2023 by the opening of a new entrance system on the Creation Factory’s ground floor. It will change from a closed entrance hall to a space with two entrances, connecting various facilities and areas in the complex. The centre’s use of spaces will also be reorganised, and the complex will be home to new installations belonging to the Sant Andreu neighbourhood’s school of music.
The conference, which starts at 10 am and finishes at 6 pm, will draw on the Creation Factory’s playability diagnoses, carried out in collaboration with neighbourhood schools; the analysis of hospitality types performed under the EquiCom programme; and the experiences of various leading national and international cultural centres, Barcelona’s network of creation factories and some local facilities in Barcelona. The cases to be presented include the Lincoln Center in New York, the Le CentQuatre in Paris, the Friche la Belle de Mai in Marseille, the Tabakalera in San Sebastian and the Seoul Artists’ Platform in Seoul.
