It could be said that Casas para todos [Houses for All] (Gereon Wetzel, 52', 2013) is the non-fiction film which best portrays the Spanish landscape of abandoned ruins following the burst of the real estate bubble. The title couldn’t be more ironic: besides the ruins, it reflects the fact that Spain is a country that defies understanding—full of people without houses and, above all, houses without people.
In the wake of this situation, alternative housing schemes have been launched which propose new models of cohabitation and construction, with accessible prices. La Borda is a successful example of this in Barcelona, particularly in the Can Batlló estate. It is the tallest wooden building in Spain; an ecofeminist project based on solidarity economy values applied to housing.
On this occasion, La Borda’s online documentary shall guide the debate on cooperation alternatives and how this transformation is being explained in the public domain.
Joan Miquel Gual is a member of the Memòria en moviment association, at La Borda SCCL and the curator of the El poble desnonat film series.
