Immersive room at the Monastery of Pedralbes

The strategy for geographical diversification of the tourism offer includes the creation of an immersive room in the Chapel of Saint Michael at the Monastery of Pedralbes.

The project, carried out by the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB), aims to showcase the content of the chapel without damaging the restored murals.  The new immersive room is designed to make these paintings more accessible to visitors.

This initiative focuses on the mural paintings in the Chapel of Sant Miquel, located within the Reial Monestir of Santa Maria de Pedralbes. This 14th-century artwork is one of the main attractions of the monumental complex, drawing a large number of visitors by itself.

For this reason, and given the small dimensions of the space where the paintings are located, conservation experts recommend limiting the impact of large and continuous crowds. In this regard, the project involves creating a new museum space in a room located near the Chapel of Sant Miquel, with two main objectives

  • While in-person visits to the chapel will continue, the goal is to reduce congestion as much as possible to minimise the impact on the preservation of the paintings.
  • The aim is to wealth of content about the paintings, going beyond mere contemplation, through the use of augmented reality, mapping technologies and interactivity.

To achieve this, an immersive and interactive room will be created, allowing visitors to explore the murals in great detail and access multiple levels of information about them. An audiovisual presentation will also be created to highlight the innovation that these murals represent in the context of Catalan Gothic art, along with an interactive screen displaying a map of the alterations the murals underwent before the restoration work. Finally, the monastery’s website will be revamped and expanded with new content related to the mural paintings.
