Renovating the escalators on Montjuïc mountain

Barcelona Serveis Municipals (BSM) is renovating or replacing the existing escalators on Montjuïc mountain.

These escalators have reached the end of their useful life, resulting in frequent breakdowns, high energy consumption, and limited or, in some cases, unavailable spare parts. As a result, this limits access to every part of the mountain.
In this context, BSM is replacing or updating the current escalators on Montjuïc mountain with more modern, energy-efficient ones – resulting in reduced energy consumption – and enabling remote, digital and centralised management. This higher efficiency will result in a reduction in energy consumption.

Specifically, the project includes the renovation of the 22 escalators, which are used annually by approximately 5,000,000 people for various purposes, such as attending recreational events, visiting cultural sites, engaging in sports activities and attending academic training, among others. Montjuïc mountain is home to many tourist attractions that are visited by the majority of tourists who come to Barcelona.
