Renovation of Montjuïc Castle
The strategy for geographical diversification of the tourism offer includes a plan to renovate Montjuïc Castle.
The project, carried out by Barcelona d’Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA), aims to refurbish the Guardhouse, the armoury courtyard rooms and the former “barracks” by improving accessibility, fire safety, and the electrical installation. Other museological interventions are planned, including the expansion and renovation of the existing visitor centre at the castle.
Montjuïc Castle is one of the most prominent public landmarks in Barcelona. Once a military site, it is now one of the city’s key tourist attractions. Its location at the top of Montjuïc mountain, its significant historical importance and recent renovations have made it a prominent tourist attraction, set apart from the must-visit sites in the city centre. The castle’s location on the outskirts of Barcelona aligns with the strategy to spread tourism across the city’s neighbourhoods, expand points of interest and establish new tourism hubs. So far, only a small part of Montjuïc Castle has been renovated and the refurbishment of nearly the entire built area and surrounding open space have been put on hold.
Therefore, the spaces yet to be adapted include the former guardhouse, the rooms in the armoury courtyard and the old barracks.
The renovation and refurbishment initiatives include:
- Improving the conditions of habitability of the Guardhouse
- Updating and renovating the armoury courtyard rooms
- Refurbishing the old barracks for multifunctional cultural use
- Renovating the former Visitor Centre to align with new realities and needs
