Renovation of city fountains to optimise their operation and use of water
The renovation and improvement of the fountains comes at a time when most of them have been out of use since 2022 owing to drought restrictions. Work will include the remodelling of the Magic Fountain in Montjuïc, thirty years after its last revamp.
The city’s ornamental fountains have been dry since November 2022, leaving them in poor repair. Maintenance work now to be carried out includes weatherproofing water basins and renewing damaged parts, with work to be done at 78 fountains in all.
In the case of the Magic Fountain, the control system, sound and lighting will be improved to equip it with the most advanced technology, with sustainability criteria and more energy-efficient lighting using LED technology for the fountain’s 4,760 lights. The work will enhance the experience of the displays.
As for drinking fountains, work is planned at 169 springs to separate their meters from the watering systems for parks. This will help improve the availability and use of water. The city currently has 1,700 drinking fountains around its streets, with information, locations and curious facts about them available on the mobile app Fonts BCN.
