Stone-Montjuïc-Barcelona. The constructions of the city

This exhibition was an invitation to learn about the relationship between Barcelona and Montjuïc from a cultural and material standpoint, with the presentation of geological samples, sculptures and architectural pieces loaned by the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC), the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia (MAC), the Barcelona City History Museum (MUHBA) and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The exhibition was held in the castle from 22 January to 29 July 2015.

Mined from Roman times to the twentieth century, the quarries of Montjuïc supplied the natural stone most used in buildings in and around Barcelona. This stone is present in such iconic buildings as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the Cathedral of Santa Creu and Santa Eulalia, and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and Casa Milà, the latter known as La Pedrera. The sandstone karst of Montjuïc is compact and durable and was the basic material employed in the main buildings in Barcelona until the mid 1980s.
