Sonoma is a word that doesn’t exist. However, it contains the Greek root soma (“body”) and the Latin root sonum (“sound”):
body of sound or sound of the body. Sonoma would be this sound of a body falling, the desperation of human beings to keep believing we are still alive, that we are still awake.
In this piece, Marcos Morau revisits the basic ideas of Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution, created in 2016 at the Ballet de Lorraine, based on the figure of Buñuel, medieval Calanda and cosmopolitan Paris.
Sonoma stems from the need to go back to the beginning, to the body, the flesh, to lose oneself in a journey between dream and fiction where what is human meets what is extraordinary. Sonoma is also believed to mean “valley of the Moon” in one of the Indigenous languages of northern California. According to legend, every night the Moon comes out to curl up on the plains, where the cries, the howls and the drum blasts form a hypnotic pulse, like a comforting lullaby.
