Lives free of gender violence

Gender-based violence is the violence that women suffer for the sole fact of being women in a framework of power relations between men and women and that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering, whether it occurs in the public or private sphere.

It is a key component of gender discrimination and a serious expression of the structural inequality that exists between men and women. In this sense, it is a violation of human rights and an impediment to women being able to develop freely and under equal conditions and opportunities with men. Feminism, however, is a social and political position for the defense of rights and freedoms between men and women and an effective tool for guaranteeing a life free from sexist violence.

Gender violence. General scope

It is necessary to break with the stereotype that links gender violence to the lower social classes. Violence is transversal to all social groups and covers a vast majority of women at some point in their lives, regardless of their socioeconomic position.

Gender violence in the area of partners and ex-partners

The emotional ties established with the aggressors condition the ability of women to detect some situations of violence. In this sense, the guilt and shame resulting from the normalization of this violence and the stereotypes that accompany it can take on a special role when it comes to aggressors who are partners. On the other hand, it is important to highlight the psychological consequences of this violence on women and their children.

Gender violence in the family, social and work area

Gender-based violence is not exclusive to relationships. Sexual violence, gender discrimination and harassment in the workplace are also part of the violence that men inflict on women in the family, social and work environments.

Gender violence among children and teenagers

The impact of gender-based violence on children and adolescents can leave lifelong consequences. Furthermore, in most cases the aggressors are family members or people from the environment, which makes prevention and attention to the victim difficult.

Identification and tolerance in gender violence

In general, men have more difficulty than women in identifying gender-based violence. However, in recent years a certain level of awareness and ability to detect these situations has been achieved, but even today the behaviors most recognized as violence are those that have to do with physical integrity, while those of a psychological or economic nature are less identified.
