Mobility
Mobility is gendered: daily commutes, timetables, routes and the means of transport used are heavily influenced by gender and other factors of inequality.
Barcelona City Council is working to incorporate the gender perspective in its mobility policies, with the understanding that women, carers and other groups often experience the city differently, with more fragmented, multimodal routes associated with care work.
From this perspective, we are promoting safer, more equitable and more accessible mobility for all. This encompasses everything from planning school routes to traffic-calming urban environments to analysing data broken down by sex and other variables. This perspective enables us to design public policies that not only improve the efficiency of commutes but also contribute to a fairer and more liveable city for everyone.
How the gender perspective can be taken into account in mobility
-
Participating in the design and monitoring of urban mobility plans, which already include the gender perspective as a cross-cutting principle.
-
Fostering women’s participation in the Mobility Pact to guarantee that the voices of women and other groups are taken into account in decision-making.
-
Analysing the gender impacts of mobility policies, through studies such as the one examining the fare system and the inequalities it creates.
-
Supporting the design and implementation of protocols to prevent gender violence in transport and public spaces.
