Regulations for Gender Equity at Barcelona City Council
The Regulations for Gender Equity at Barcelona City Council (REG) was passed at the Municipal Council plenary session on 21 December 2018 in fulfilment of the legal mandate established by Article 6.1 d) of Act 17/2015, of 21 July, on the effective equality of women and men, which assigns local institutions the function of ‘creating and adapting the mechanisms needed to include the mainstreaming of the gender perspective in their political initiatives’.
These regulations are a key tool for combining, updating and enhancing existing international, Spanish, Catalan and local regulations to provide legal certainty in municipal initiatives on gender matters.
How can the gender perspective be taken into account in municipal regulations?
Including gender goals in municipal regulations is essential in order to guarantee real, effective equality in areas under the City Council’s remit. This inclusion also contributes to fulfilment of its international commitments and the construction of fairer, more cohesive and more sustainable communities that reflect the needs and aspirations of all city residents.
Barcelona City Council’s main mechanisms to include the gender perspective in regulations are gender impact reports.
