Mauritania, 1939
Stamp issued to commemorate the International Exhibition held in New York in 1939, issued to be put into circulation in the old French colony of Mauritania. Mauritania was part of French West Africa, a federation that comprised the French domains of Senegal, Sudan, the Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Niger, Guinea, Ivory Coast and the aforementioned colony. In 1960 the country gained its independence, to constitute the Republic of Mauritania.
