One of the main tasks carried out by the IMMB since its creation is related to the process of modernisation and refurbishment of the markets.
This process, which involves the agreement and active participation of traders in each of the markets, has its starting point in the analysis of the evolution of trade and in how to adapt the markets to make them commercially competitive and to respond to the demands of the citizenship.
The modernisation of a market involves adapting the commercial supply and infrastructure and services to the demand, and is the result of commercial and social studies carried out in the catchment areas of each market.
Improving energy efficiency is a key element in planning comprehensive market transformations, upgrades and maintenance of network facilities, as well as efficient waste management.
The refurbishments are carried out in accordance with what is called the "Barcelona refurbishment model" and different levels of intervention are foreseen:
- Recovery of the architectural value of the building and the artistic elements.
- Redefining the commercial mix, adapting it to what is commercially sustainable and introducing new operators to complete its offer.
- Locating the logistics areas of the market underground and creating car parks and unloading bays where possible.
- Selective rubbish collection and an environmental commitment.
- Market promotion through communication and commercial promotion campaigns and the production of their own media communication.
