The comprehensive modernisation and refurbishment project was an initiative of the IMMB in agreement with the traders and was integrated into the PAM 2004-2007 Municipal Action Plan. The works, which began in July 2005 and were completed in March 2007, were carried out by the company Necso following a project by Josep Miàs, right-hand man of the late Enric Miralles ꟷauthor, together with Benedetta Tagliabue, of the Mercat de Santa Caterina. The project preserves the characteristic original iron structure of the original market. The project was recognised with the 2007 City of Barcelona award.
Technical details:
- Preservation of the original iron structure of the market, from 1884. Maintenance of the vault.
- Revaluation of the uniqueness of the building with the creation of a connecting pergola between the market and the square.
- Full integration of other structural elements in the public space (stairs, ventilation grilles, entrances, etc.).
- Recovery of traditional elements (flooring, marbles and structure).
- Lightweight cover of metal panels with thermal insulation. False ceiling with a metallic mesh that creates a reflective effect. Metal parts with zinc coating in two different tones.
- Installation of 180 solar panels, arranged in 18 rows of 10 panels on the roof, which generate 30 kW/h, 40% of the market's energy coverage.
