In 1998, the refurbishment of the market began, which entailed the reform of the paving and the roof, the construction of underground floors for loading and unloading bays, storerooms and waste collection.
A new building was also built at the back to house the administrative offices of the market, and the porticoed square was recovered with the removal and relocation of the 90 small stalls that occupied the space between the porches and columns of the square. This last action allowed natural light to enter the market, which regained its original appearance.
The total cost of the refurbishment was 1,422 million of the old pesetas (about 8.5 million euros); 3 million euros were contributed from European funds. The inauguration took place on 21st April, 2001.
