In February 1997, the refurbishment works began, which ended on 12th May, 1998. The works, carried out at the initiative of the IMMB and in agreement with the traders, followed the project of the architect Albert de Pineda i Álvarez.
The action consisted of the demolition and reconstruction of the interior of the market, the construction of two underground floors and the rehabilitation of the façades and the roof. On the first floor, the storeroom, the loading and unloading bays and a selective rubbish collection plant were installed.
The refurbishment respected the two façades of the building, in which only the closing wooden panels were replaced by the glass walls that can be seen today. It also involved a rationalisation of the number of stalls and an enlargement of the new ones. On 16th May, 1998, the market was reopened.
