Work gets under way at the end of the year to transform C/ Muntanya, in line with the new street model for the 21st century which prioritises local people, greenery and sustainable mobility, facilitating journeys on foot and reducing air pollution and noise and adding vitality to local shops. This will be the first green street in the neighbourhood of El Camp de l’Arpa del Clot.
The project will take eleven months to complete and cover the section of C/ Muntanya between the streets of Mallorca and Coll i Vehí, and in C/ Eterna Memòria (carrying on from C/ Muntanya), between the streets of Coll i Vehí and Freser.
The street currently has a road surface with a traffic lane and parking lanes on either side, The pavements are narrow, between 2.25 and 2.35 metres wide, and there are no trees. The transformation project follows those being implemented in the green streets in the districts of L’Eixample and Sant Martí, in Av. Meridiana, Av. Diagonal and Via Laietana: the street will be traffic-calmed and have curbless paving, with pedestrians and bikes getting priority. Meeting spaces will be created to foster social uses and tree beds and trees added to generate shade and improve environmental conditions.
In terms of traffic, priority will be given to local vehicles and a speed limit of 10 km/h will apply. In the section between the streets of Mallorca and Vidiella, the intention is to maintain the prohibition on traffic which is currently in place, with the exception of emergency vehicles and the possibility for goods vehicles to load or unload in the spaces indicated for this. Lighting and urban furniture will also be installed, including wooden benches, bike parking and an accessible water spring.
A project shared with local people
The final project for the revamp is now ready and will entail the renewal of an area of over 5,500 square metres. The project should soon be approved by the government commission before being shared further and agreed on with local residents and various organisations in the neighbourhood, as has been the case from the outset.
The transformation of C/ Muntanya into a green street is part of the project to create a superblock in the neighbourhood, an initiative resulting from the participatory budget for the District of Sant Martí. This particular project is the first of the actions planned towards street-calming the area and will involve an investment of 2.5 million euros.
