Byzantine mysticism attached considerable importance to the belief in the angelic transmission of Church songs. Numerous depictions of angelic choirs surrounding God's throne in biblical texts highlight the sonorous dimension of heavenly worship. Therefore, Orthodox liturgical music is based on melodies which, when transcribed and produced by hymnographers, are considered to be echoes or models of heavenly beauty.
