Religious organisations and places of worship
Barcelona is a plural, diverse and dynamic city; this diversity is also clearly demonstrated in the area of religion and beliefs, with over thirty different religious traditions. Like Barcelona’s residents and its associations, the city's map of religions is a dynamic, ever-changing reality, combining strongly established communities and newly-created organisations, mergers, breakaways and dissolutions.
We need to be aware of the difference between a religious community and a place of worship. Sometimes, a single religious organisation may have various places of worship, while on other occasions, various communities share a single place. There are also communities that worship in locations that have another main use. It is, therefore, important to look beyond the numbers concerning places of worship in order to understand the religious reality of the city.
The OAR is continually updating the Barcelona guide on religious matters, as well as the map of places of worship and other religious and spiritual communities or organisations of the city.
