On March 25, 2015, a first collaboration agreement was signed between Barcelona and Yokohama, focused on smart city and lasting four years. Subsequently, on March 29, 2019, a new "Friendship and Cooperation Agreement" was signed between the two cities, through which it was agreed to promote reciprocal cooperation for four years in areas such as smart city, renewable energy, circular society, transport and city promotion.

On the other hand, it can be noted that Barcelona City Council has participated in the Asian Smart City Conference organized by Yokohama in 2020 and 2021 and that Yokohama has participated in the Smart City Expo World Congress of Barcelona since 2011.
