Barcelona recently welcomed a delegation from Konak, the central municipality and administrative-commercial hub of Izmir, Turkey. Like Barcelona, Izmir is part of the EU Mission “100 Climate-neutral and Smart Cities”.

The visit aimed to foster the exchange of best practices in climate policy, educational and cultural initiatives, and youth engagement in addressing the climate emergency. The meeting was part of the Localization for Climate Change Adaptation project, funded by the Turkish-European Cooperation Fund.

The eight-member delegation from Konak, consisting of councillors, technicians, and representatives from various organisations, visited La Fàbrica del Sol, an environmental education facility supported by the Barcelona City Council.

Additionally, they learned about the overall context of the More Sustainable Barcelona Network (B+S), with a particular focus on the More Sustainable Schools program, which promotes youth and children’s participation in tackling the climate crisis.

The visit concluded with a guided tour of various city locations, highlighting projects aligned with climate adaptation policies, such as the Plan for Shade and the new facilities around Les Glòries.
