In all, 565 of the certifications correspond to the city of Barcelona, while the other 576 correspond to the province.

The Commitment to the tourist sustainability of destination Barcelona is a shared project between the City Council and Barcelona Provincial Council, in collaboration with the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Barcelona Tourism Consortium, promoting sustainable tourism in line with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Barcelona was the first city to gain the Biosphere certification in 2011, and since then the expansion of the seal has gone from strength to strength. In 2022, the certification was gained by the destination, which includes the brands of Costa Barcelona, Paisatges Barcelona and Pirineus Barcelona.

The ceremony at the Palau de la Música included a special mention for the good practice of the restaurant Lluerna in terms of putting people at the centre, Melià Hotels for its recovery of grey water, Casa Batlló for the labour insertion of people with autism spectrum disorder, the Òptica Florit for added value in sustainability and the circular economy, the Grup Hesperia Hotels for valuing the local community and the Palau de la Música itself for its neutral carbon footprint.
