Carlos Marqués-Marcet’s voice is one of the most distinctive in Catalan and Spanish cinema. With films such as 10,000 km and The Days to Come, he has experimented with form and content, exercising a freedom that never slips into inaccessibility. In They Will Be Dust (Polvo serán in Spanish), he takes more risks than ever, and they pay off in what could be described as a musical about knowing how to live and knowing when to leave. Luminous, delicate, uninhibited and poetic, the film charts unexpected paths, touching and entertaining in equal measure, with a playful nod to Busby Berkeley’s classic choreographies. And what a leading duo! Ángela Molina and Alfredo Castro shine as a couple making an irrevocable choice. Maria Arnal’s music and La Veronal’s choreography crown this countercultural, provocative film—one of the best and most surprising in recent years.
