The study on the limitations affecting access to rights for young people of diverse origin in Barcelona commences

Diversity. The Barcelona Municipal Immigration Council and Barcelona City Council are the driving force behind the study.

This study, entitled “A Study on the Limits to Access to Rights for Young People of Diverse Origin”, launched by the Barcelona Municipal Immigration Council, aims to gain a clear understanding of the current situation of a group within the population that has been growing in the city, and will continue to do so in the coming years. Young people of diverse origin are a group that is growing fast, and one that struggles to achieve full citizenship rights, meaning that action needs to be taken, and strategies for intervention developed.

The study takes an in-depth analysis based on a participatory process as its starting point. Young people aged between 15 and 30 were consulted regarding access to recognised, guaranteed rights in the city, such as rights to education, training, jobs, housing, and healthcare, and on questions of discrimination and their sense of belonging.

And based on the situations and needs identified, the aim is to provide the appropriate tools and resources to devise proposals to improve the access of this group to these services/rights, and a working plan to develop public policies that facilitate access to rights for young people from migrant backgrounds.

The study is complemented by the participation of, and contributions from, the organisations that make up the Barcelona Municipal Immigration Council, experts in the field, and professionals from Barcelona City Council.

Discussion groups made up of young people from different backgrounds will focus on the following topics:

  • Housing
  • Education, training and work
  • Discrimination and citizenship rights: racism, feminisms and LGTBIQ+ affairs
  • Access to healthcare: mental and emotional health, sexual and reproductive health
  • Sense of belonging and participation, membership of associations
  • Leisure, recreational/ sporting activities

The Council chose “young people of diverse origin in Barcelona” as a central theme for the years 2023 and 2024, as proposed by the member organisations and with the agreement of the Standing Committee. Although this is a relatively new issue, it is rapidly growing in importance and needs to be understood and addressed.
