Barcelona City Council

The subject matter of this 2021 call for applications is the awarding of subsidies for research and innovation projects, on a competitive basis, provided by the Barcelona City Council in collaboration with the “la Caixa” Foundation, under the agreement signed on 11 May 2021, establishing the governing rules approved by the Governing Commission on 1 July 2021.

This call aims to have a positive impact on society by generating evidence for informing future policy decisions and providing an impetus for the city's research network, through the establishment of synergies between research teams, participation from third-sector organisations and the promotion of open access for all citizens to the results of the research.

Projects must be based on research into urban challenges falling within the following categories:

• Ageing and quality of life.

• Mobility and environmental respect and protection.

Projects eligible for a subsidy must meet the following requirements:

• Address urban challenges from a metropolitan, interdisciplinary perspective.

• Aim to provide scientific evidence for inspiring Barcelona’s future political decisions.

• Be original, without prejudice to the fact research lines already embarked on by the applicants may be registered there or continued.

• Deal with subjects from a local perspective, taking into account the context of Barcelona and its metropolitan area.

• Be carried out within a maximum period of eighteen months as from their date of notification.

• In addition, the projects must take the gender perspective into account in their treatment of scientific issues, their research group’s composition, that is, the natural persons carrying out the project, and their methodologies.

• Not have obtained a subsidy for the same project in calls launched by Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the ”la Caixa” Foundation, for subsidy applications for research and innovation projects in 2019 and 2021.

The procedure for awarding subsidies in this 2022 call will be open on a publicly competitive basis, but only projects that are run by a group of legal persons, at least two of which must be institutions with research as one of their main activities, will be eligible for submission.

The application period is from 5 April to 19 May 2022 (first and last dates included).
