Shomyo

24.05.2025

Although many forms of Zen Buddhism are known for their austere liturgy, shōmyō is the vocal element that structures liturgical practice in several Zen traditions.
Originating in the 9th century, shōmyō combines slow, melismatic vocalization with a special focus on breathing and bodily presence, without losing sight of the text and its meaning.
The workshop will explore vocal techniques used in this chant, along with simple exercises involving the body, breathing, and attention to the hara (the energy center located in the abdomen).
This is a hands-on, open workshop, and no prior musical experience is required. Registration is mandatory for those participating in the practical session. Attendees are also welcome to join as listeners free of charge, without prior booking, until the venue reaches capacity.

Workshop given by Junko Ueda
Junko Ueda is a singer and Satsuma biwa performer, specializing in both the narration of traditional epic tales and Buddhist shōmyō chanting.
