The Documentation and Research Area is a museum’s service that organizes, conserve and spreads all documentation generated by the collections. The aim is to integrate collections and unify management processes to make it accessible with best possible tools, creating criteria of conservation and preservation and access to research.

SPECIALIZED LIBRARY

The library contains  moret han 7,000 monographs, journals and specialized on organology. The content of these publications focuses on musical instruments and their history and development within an ethnographic, historical and scientific framework.

MUSIC INSTRUMENTS AND ART OBJECTS

More than 2.400 music instruments and  400 art objects that allow carefully study their different scientific aspects. A quarter of the fund is in the permanent exhibition and the rest is kept in accessible reserves.

HISTORIC ARCHIVE

The musical archive comprises donations and legacies of musicians closely tied to Barcelona’s musical culture from the 19th and 20th centuries as Isaac Albéniz, Enric Granados, Joaqui, Malats, Joan Manén and Miquel Llobet, among others. Preserved from original handwritten scores and photographs to personal objects, works of art and a remarkable epistolary collection . It is a basic reference for the study of music in Catalonia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

SOUND FONDS

Conserves a set of 13.000 sound records in different media: wax cylinders, piano rolls, perforated tapes, open tapes… showing the evolutions of the fixation of sound in the last three hundred years.

MEDIA

The Multimedia Archive comprises more than 60,000 items that document the collections and the activity of the museum: identification and restoration photographs of the instruments, digitized documents of the historical archive and the sound collection, images of the permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as of the activities and concerts. Part of this archive can be consulted through the online collections.

For access to the specialized library, the Historic archive and instruments prior booking and the completion of the application form is required. mdmb_documentacio@bcn.cat
