Trànsits: the musics of the romanian orthodox church

This year’s Trànsits series closes its second edition with a liturgy within the framework of Orthodox Easter.

On this occasion we explore a double format that includes an introduction to Byzantine music and its use within the Romanian Orthodox tradition by Alejandro Mateo, followed by a conversation moderated by Beza Oliver in which Father Aurel Bunda, from the church, participates. Romanian Orthodox Saint George of Barcelona, ​​Jordi Sacasas, researcher and curator of the museum of the basilica of Santa Maria del Pi and Alejandro Mateo, musician and member of the Romanian Orthodox Saint George church of Barcelona.

In this conversation they will bring us closer to the particularities of Orthodox Easter, the characteristics and significance of the musical event in the Romanian Orthodox Church in general and this liturgy in particular, paying special attention to the relationship with the rites and music of the Catholic Church, as well as other issues linked to the experience of religious events in the Romanian diaspora in the Barcelona area.

Participants:

Aurel Bunda

Born in Romania, where he studied at the “Bishop Quesariel Seminary”. He graduated in History of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Faculty of Theology in Bucharest and later in History. Established in Barcelona since 2000, he is archpriest of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Catalonia.

Jordi Sacasas Segura

Archivist of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi and curator of its museum and treasure. Largely self-taught, he studied at the Escola de la Lonja and at the UIB History of Art, at the ISCREB and at the FHEAG-AUSP.

In 1996 he founded the Scola Pinensis, specialized in Gregorian music and plainchant with special attention to the musical works preserved in the archive of Santa Maria del Pi.

Alejandro Mateo García

Graduated from ESMUC in Historical Violin, aspiring music composer for audiovisuals and musicologist. In 2016 he was baptized in the Romanian Orthodox Church of Barcelona and became interested in Byzantine chant and its use in Orthodox spirituality.

Beza Oliver Martínez

Born in Kombolcha (Ethiopia) in 1998, she graduated in literary studies from the UB and specialized in the field of migration from the UAB. Currently, she works in the Religious Affairs Office of Barcelona City Council as a specialist in Christianity and interculturality.
