On May 29, 1946, the Museu de la Música de Barcelona (Barcelona Music Museum) was inaugurated under the direction of cellist and musicologist Josep Ricart i Matas, with an event echoed by several city newspapers. During the following decades Ricart i Matas was gathering instruments from around the world through purchases and donations, in order to expand the initial funds based especially on the collection of instruments by Orsina Baget and Joaquim Folch. This 'Museu de Música', as the newspapers of the time call it, meant the crystallization of a process that began many years ago, as you can read in this section “History” in our web.

From the press clippings of that day, we recovered one that is part of the personal collection of Josep Ricart i Matas, given to the museum in 2019 by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, universal heir to his assets and personal archive. It is an interview made by the journalist and cartoonist Manuel del Arco Álvarez to the then director of the brand new museum, in the section "Usted dirá ...", of the Diario de Barcelona. We transcribe the entire article, spiced with ironic comments and accompanied by a caricature of Ricart i Matas:

Barcelona cuenta desde hoy con un Museo Municipal de Música. Antes de la inauguración oficial lo he visitado acompañado de su director, don José Ricart Matas. Por cierto que he tenido que vencer la resistencia de este hombre tan serio que ha tomado la música en su tono más grave. Cuando le indiqué mi propósito, inició la fuga... la fuga, no era precisamente de Bach, sino de Ricart.
—Hágase cuenta —le dije— que soy el primer visitante. ¿Qué hay, aquí dentro?
Y el maestro Ricart Matas no tuvo otro remedio que servirme de “Cicerone”...
—Vamos por orden. Aquí están los autógrafos de Albéniz, Nicolau, Manén, Obiols, cartas de Barbieri, Arrieta. Un original de Usandizaga...
—Y estas medallas y trofeos, ¿de quién son?
—En esta vitrina están los premios concedidos a la Banda Municipal.
—Sigamos.
—Una muestra de instrumentos populares. Flautas, castañuelas, chirimías, rimbaus, de Ibiza.
— Visto y anotado. Continuemos.
— Apunte esto que es interesante. “Una tenora de Pep Ventura”, de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.
— Prosigamos, esto es una gaita, ¿no?
—Sí, señor, y eso un claricímbalo y lo otro un clavicordio.
—Aquí hay de todo. Hasta una guitarra.
—Y violines, violas y viellas.
—Y un timpanón del siglo XVIII, según leo.
—No se olvide de este órgano que procede del exconvento de Santa Catalina.
—No lo olvido. Ahora entremos en los instrumentos de viento.
—Así es; un saxofón pintoresco; una flauta de cristal; otra flauta con historia, pues ella estrenó “Marina”. Y hasta un bastón flauta.
—¿Pasamos a la selva, señor Ricart?
— Entremos. Instrumentos exóticos. Un Arud (laud), un rehab y tambores de Marruecos. Y para que no falte nada una flauta para encantar serpientes.
— ¡Lagarto, lagarto! Y usted tan serio, señor Ricart. ¿Dónde vamos ahora?
—Un viaje largo. Piezas de la India, China, Filipinas y América. Mire una guitarra hecha con un coco. Y esta otra con el cascarón de un quirquincho del Perú.
—¿Hay algo más que ver?
—Mi despacho.
—Veamos.
—Un fichero donde todo está registrado.
—Para un hombre tan ordenado como usted, es natural.
—Y en esa caja, qué hay?
—¡Ah
—¿ Se puede ver?
—Es un “copólogo”.
—¿Tiene música?
—Mire, la abre y aparece un juego completo de copas que están pidiendo a gritos manzanilla.
—¡Vaya, vaya!..señor Ricart. ¿Y esto es un despacho?
—No piense mal; estas copas, con agua; dan notas diferentes; es un instrumento más de música.
—Ya, me extrañaba a mi…

In a note that is part of the collection of Ricart i Matas we find some annotations on museography and current affairs. The first refers to the request for some showcases for the museum, and the second to a news item about the inauguration that appeared in the press on June 17, 1946.

The Ricart i Matas collection also contains a photograph from 1964 that testifies to the act of donation of the violin Étienne Maire by the violinist, composer and conductor Joan Manén, an instrument displayed in the museum's permanent exhibition.

Since then the collection of instruments has increased in various ways (purchases, donations, free loans, etc.). Thus we were able to have one of the best collections of guitars in the world, twenty very remarkable psalteries, unique glass flutes and tradicionals musical instruments from the five continents... Along the way there have been two more re-inaugurations: in 1980 we opened the doors again in the Casa Quadras, and in 2007 we opened the current headquarters within the L'Auditori building. 

And hopefully for many more years!
