Siurells are traditional musical objects created in Mallorca and made of baked clay. Painted in white (formerly with lime, and nowadays with paint), and decorated with bright colors (usually green and red and, less frequently yellow and blue), they take the form of small figures of very diverse typology: imaginary beings (demons, mermaids), anthropomorphs (men, women, boys and girls), religious images (nativity scenes, saints) and animals (dogs, snakes, oxen, chickens, etc.).
The physiognomy, expressiveness and attitude of these simple and humble figures is always different. Added to the body of the figure or to the pedestal that supports it, we find a whistle with a simple hokle to blow and a bevel that generates friction with the air. The result is a sharp and loud sound.
This Nativity scene of siurells is formed by figurines created during in the workshops of Salvador Torrens i Seguí and Can Piritis, in Inca. The nativity is from the pottery of Sa Roca Llisa, in Pòrtol, a recent manufacture.
