Marc Vilanova, saxophonist and sound artist, offers us a spectacular, large-scale piece that stretches the limits of our hearing. Working with 26 sound cards, 104 amplifiers and 204 dismembered or “dismembraned” loudspeakers, he shows us the movement of electro-magnets moving at frequencies below the normal threshold of our hearing (at less than 20 cycles per second, we cannot perceive continuous tones but only the separate, regular, sequential beat of each oscillation). The choreography of the vibrating loudspeakers corresponds to algorithmic musical compositions in which the polyrhythms of the residual sounds of the electromagnets (soft scratching, screeching and thudding) return to the realm of sound when it seemed that they had no place in it. The fragility of the components, the friction between the different elements and hundreds of variables turn this sculptural installation into a new musical instrument that cannot fail to surprise.
