Stripsoding is a participatory sound installation inspired by the experimental vocal piece Stripsody (1966) by Cathy Berberian—an iconic work that also serves as the starting point for the exhibition curated by Arnau Horta, currently on view at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge.
Composed entirely of onomatopoeias inspired by the language of comics, Berberian’s work radically explores the voice as an expressive vehicle. It brings together sounds, pantomimic gestures, musical textures, and overflowing theatricality, incorporating the visual and object-based world of the genre, with drawings and actions graphically suggested.
Cristina Cubells and Àlex Tentor have developed an educational version of the project for the Museu de la Música. They propose three collective creation workshops for family audiences in which, through an expanded sound macro-score and the elements proposed by Berberian, participants will explore the connection between the piece and spontaneous gesture as a way to rematerialize it.
The results of these workshops will become part of a participatory sound installation open to the public until September 28 in the museum's temporary exhibition hall.
As part of this collaboration, Arnau Horta will offer a guided tour of the Stripsody exhibition at La Virreina on September 27, at 5:30 p.m., aimed at families and workshop participants.
In collaboration with La Virreina Image Center and ESMUC.
