Information
The protocol of twinning between Barcelona and Shanghai was formalised on 31st October 2001. On 24th July 2006 an addenda was signed, in which the fields of collaboration which were considered to be a priority, were defined.
The aims of this twinning agreement were to exchange information and to collaborate on topics of mutual interest, especially in economic development, urban planning, environmental programmes, tourism, culture and sports.
Prior to this, in 1989, Shanghai and Barcelona had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, in which many of the fields which would be the object of collaboration in the twinning agreement protocol, were already detailed.
The collaboration between Shanghai and Barcelona is continual and fluent. In 2010 Barcelona had a presence in the Expo of Shanghai.
Various visits have been exchanged by delegations from both cities, and it could be said that the relation with Shanghai represents a gateway to Asia for Barcelona.
