Urban planning. The first shelters for the future Sicília stop have been installed and welding has now started to fix the tracks in their definitive place.
The work to connect the tram systems in Av. Diagonal is now clearly visible. This week brought the installation of the first shelters for the future Sicília stop, and welding has now started to fix the tracks in their definitive place. The final project for the second stage, covering the section between Verdaguer and Francesc Macià, is now being drafted.
Work on the third lane of the continuous feed system along the ground gets under way in April, with surfacing at the road junctions. Tracks and the power supplies will be embedded at these points, making for open-plan spaces with no posts or overhead power infrastructure.
In the first stage of the connection, work is being carried out on various sections between Glòries and Verdaguer, to create three new stops (Monumental, Sicília and Verdaguer) and the new interchange at Glòries. The new tram system will connect with four metro lines (L1, L2, L4 and L5) and thirteen TMB bus services, as well as the rest of the Trambesòs lines. Work is expected to be completed at the end of 2023, with the new tramline to come into service in 2024.
An urban model giving priority to pedestrians and sustainable mobility
The new unified tram system will enable passengers to get from Pl. Glòries to Pg. Sant Joan in just seven minutes. Estimates put the increase in the current volume of Trambesòs users at 58%, some 19,000 more passengers per working day.
Final project being drafted for the second stage of work
The final project for the second stage of work to connect the tram systems in Av. Diagonal has been awarded through BIMSA and corresponds to the section between Verdaguer and Francesc Macià. The winning team is already working on the project, which should be ready in 2024 so that work can follow straight on from the first stage.
The project will have to include the work needed to implement the tram network (infrastructure and superstructure) in the entire area of action and the work to reurbanise the surroundings.
