Battle of Montjuïc. Defending the city from the Castle

Battle of Montjuïc was the combat that took place on 26 January 1641 in Montjuïc mountain in Barcelona seven months after the popular uprising known as the “Corpus de Sang” (Corpus of Blood, 7 June 1640).

Weapons: el negoci de les armes (Weapons: the weapons business)

Montjuïc Castle holds the exhibition “Weapons: The weapons business”, a collection of images taken by photojournalist Marc Javierre-Kohan, author of the pictures and curator of the exhibition.. In September 2016 Javierre Kohan-published a book with the same title to denounce the perversion of the weapons industry using images taken at “Eurosatory”, one of the most important international fairs in the weapons industry. The exhibition also includes a series of images taken by Javierre-Kohan itself from the attacks that took place in Paris in November 2015, which he lived in first person, and show the contradictions and perversions of this deadly industry.

Contemplating the City. Landscapes of Barcelona

Montjuïc Castle presents a kaleidoscopic photography exhibition of Barcelona that allows everyone to reinterpret its many landscapes through their own eyes. A landscape is not only a physical place; it is also a sentimental place, influenced by ideas and feelings. Ultimately it becomes a subjective framework created by whoever observes and experiences it.

This exhibition commemorated the legendary Montjuïc racing circuit, scene of some of the most important national and international motoring and motorcycling events.

Stone-Montjuïc-Barcelona. The constructions of the city

This exhibition was an invitation to learn about the relationship between Barcelona and Montjuïc from a cultural and material standpoint, with the presentation of geological samples, sculptures and architectural pieces loaned by the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC), the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia (MAC), the Barcelona City History Museum (MUHBA) and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The exhibition was held in the castle from 22 January to 29 July 2015.

"Catalunya es fa forta": Fortress design and engineering

Montjuïc Castle hosted the exhibition Catalunya es fa forta (Catalonia fortifies itself) from 23 December 2014 to 31 March 2015. The exhibition took visitors on a tour of the main fortresses in modern Catalonia. It explained the types of bastions and the reason for the pentagonal and triangular shapes of the fortifications. The purpose of the exhibition was to acquaint visitors with the architectural engineering of the castles and give them the sensation of being within the walls of a fortress during the visit.

Spherical Memory

The artist Quim Tarrida installed a large inflatable sculpture in the middle of the parade ground at Montjuïc Castle, a sphere converted into a mirror that prompted visitors to reflect on memory, oblivion and the cult to one’s own image.

Romania Flashback

This exhibition, held in Montjuïc Castle from 1 October 2014 to 11 January 2015 and organised around the works of photographers Florin Andreescu and Andrei Pandele, portrays Romanian society in the last few years of the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceauşescu through scenes taken from everyday life, as well as images of the events of the revolution of December 1989.

"Baixant de la Font del Gat": The Popular Fountains of Montjuïc

From 18 July to 30 November 2014, the Castell de Montjuïc hosted the exhibition "Baixant de la Font del Gat. Les fonts populars de Montjuïc" (Coming down from the Font del Gat. Popular springs in Montjuïc). The exhibition immerses us in the social life that revolved around these natural heritage sites; freshwater springs which for many years were the indispensable scene of the recreational activities and celebrations of the middle and working classes in Barcelona.

The exhibition "Montjuïc 1915, primera mirada. Testimonis d’una transformació" (Montjuïc 1915. A first look. Testimonies of a transformation) was held at the castle from 30 May to 21 September 2014.

Post-war Bacelona, 1939-1945. 75 years later

This exhibition, held at the Castle from 2 March to 30 June 2014, explored the post-war period through more than 250 documents including drawings, texts, photographs and newspaper articles, from the entry of Franco's troops in the city on 26 January 1939 to the end of the mandate of the Francoist mayor Miguel Mateu i Pla in 1945.
