In 2003, a new market came into operation in Barcelona, in the Fort Pienc neighbourhood, in the block bordered by the streets of Ali Bei, Sardenya, Sicília and Ribes, where a whole set of facilities was built.
The building, constructed by ProEixample with a total area of 4,262 m² and an investment of 4,800,000 Euros, has two underground floors that house a Mercadona supermarket, logistics and market services, vehicle loading and unloading bays and rubbish collection. The fresh produce market is located on the street floor, with an area of 1,532 m² and has 14 establishments.
The municipal market forms part of an offer of facilities for the neighborhood residents that is completed with a care home for the elderly -with 150 places, and a day centre, a residence for students with a capacity for 200 people, a nursery school and the expansion of the civic centre Ateneu de Fort Pienc.
