The Museum of Music of Barcelona, together with the Asian Music Program of the ESMUC and the Gamelan Association of Barcelona, takes advantage of the programming of the ‘Legong’ concert, dedicated to Balinese gamelan music and its dance within the framework of Trànsits, to deepen the dissemination of the musical culture of the island of Bali with a program of free activities offering the opportunity to immerse in this fascinating and unknown world.

The activities will take place at the Museum of Music and ESMUC. Sessions will primarily be in English.

PROGRAM

Monday, April 7

9:30 – 12:30 | Balinese Dance Workshop with Kipas
Practical session introducing the basic technique of using the kipas or Balinese fan, a key element in many traditional dances. The kipas, used to accentuate movement and reinforce the musicality of gestures, structures the workshop content and serves as a foundation for working on sequences, expression, and coordination with the music. No prior experience required to participate.

Tuesday, April 8

11:00 – 12:30 | Introduction to Balinese Music and Dance
Theoretical exploration of gamelan, the instrumental ensemble made up of metallophones, gongs, and drums that forms the musical base of numerous ceremonies and performances in Bali, and the associated dance, highly codified and expressive, which closely coordinates with music and plays an essential role in ritual and artistic contexts.

14:00 – 15:30 | Tourism, Arts, and Identity in Bali (Session 1)
Discussion on the concept of cultural tourism and its impact on Balinese culture and musical heritage.

Wednesday, April 9

16:00 – 18:00 | Gamelan Beleganjur Workshop
Practical session introducing the gamelan beleganjur, an instrumental formation of gamelan used for processions, rituals, and public events, made up of portable percussion ensembles. The workshop will focus on interpreting a basic routine to understand the fundamental role of each instrument within the group. Suitable for people with or without prior musical experience.

Thursday, April 10

11:00 – 12:30 | Kecak Workshop
Practical session introducing kecak, a rhythmic and theatrical choral form developed in the early 20th century, where a group of performers creates a collective soundscape through rhythmic syllables like ‘cak’ (‘chac’), without instrumental accompaniment. Today, it is also a prominent element in Bali’s tourist performing arts. Basic vocal patterns and collective dynamics will be worked on. Open to everyone, no prior requirements.
