In the European context, the violin is a musical instrument linked to the symphony orchestra, baroque music, folk and jazz. In the field of academic music, it has contributed to the social imaginary of violinists as virtuoso instruments with exceptional musical skills demonstrated and developed at an early age, in competitions and in the canonical construction ofa soloist repertoire. Despite this, the importance and uses of the violin are less well known in the musical cultures of Asia, America, Africa and Oceania, and the role of the violinist differs there as well. In this theoretical and practical activity, violinist and pedagogue Ernesto Briceño will illustrate some musical adaptations and transformations that characterize this transcultural facet of the violin.
