Information

Barcelona and San Francisco signed a twinning agreement in June 2010, initially focused on a series of areas of work, which go from civil rights and culture, to mobility, smart cities, new technologies and economic development.

In 2013 a ratification of the agreement was signed, including strategic fields such as the smart cities, the achievement of a direct flight to join the two cities, the organisation of economic missions, cultural promotion, tourism and sustainable mobility.

Boston

Information

In 1983 a twinning agreement was signed between Boston and Barcelona, the first agreement with a North American city.

Over the years, there have been numerous exchanges between Boston and Barcelona, such as the regular participation of Barcelona Activa in the Biotechnology Trade Fair organised there; the carrying out of technological and innovation missions focused on new technology and biotechnology companies, and cultural exchanges.

European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed)

Definition

The IEMed is a centre of studies and analysis for the identification and interpretation of the challenges for the Mediterranean areas and for the elaboration of proposals aimed at facing them.  It offers spaces of reflection, analysis and debate, as well as assessment and aid for cultural and cooperation projects. It promotes the participation of the civil society in the Mediterranean space through various networks and in collaboration with entities from the social, economic and cultural world.    

The Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM)

A local and regional institution within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), created in 2010 in Barcelona.  ARLEM is a common project of the Committee of the Regions, of the territorial collectives from the three shores of the Mediterranean, as well as the international and European associations that represent the local and regional authorities which are active in the region.

Definition

The Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an international cooperation and development organisation of international relations made up of 43 countries.  It was officially constituted during the Euro-Mediterranean Summit of Paris, on 13th July 2008

MedCités

Definition

MedCités is a network of Mediterranean cities, created in Barcelona in 1991, under the auspices of the Technical Assistance Programme for the Environment in the Mediterranean (METAP), a programme jointly funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Commission and the World Bank. 

Tetouan

Information

The first protocol between Barcelona City Council, the Commune Urbaine de Tétouan and the Urban Agency of Tetouan was signed in 2004 and was renewed on 13th December 2006, with the aim of collaborating in the rehabilitation of five squares and the adjacent streets of the historic nucleus of Tetouan, declared Universal Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. 

Maputo

Barcelona and Maputo have been working on technical and municipal cooperation since 2007. Several friendship and cooperation protocols have been signed, which have generated a significant volume of technical and cooperation exchanges, and of development projects implemented in the city by NGOs from Barcelona. In these years there has been bilateral collaboration in the areas of Urban Projects and Planning, Archives, Libraries, Municipal Markets and Public Health.

Tunis

Information

On 30th March 1969 the twinning agreement protocol was signed between Barcelona and Tunis.
