Definition

An alliance of cities and metropolitan areas demanding the construction of railways lines in the Mediterranean corridor and the deployment of border services for high-speed passengers and goods.

Eurocities

Definition

Network of major European cities created in 1986 and which constitutes a platform for sharing ideas, exchanging experiences, and elaborating innovative responses, within the framework of common realities and issues.

In 1986 the founding cities (Frankfurt, Lyon, Milan, Rotterdam, Birmingham and Barcelona) met in Rotterdam to discuss the possibility of creating a space of European cities, and it was in Barcelona where, in a meeting in 1989, the Eurocities network was formalized.

Lyon

In November 2022, the Mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, visited Barcelona on the occasion of the Smart City Expo World Congress and was able to learn about a series of projects and programs carried out by the City Council. As a result of this visit, and given the growing collaboration between the two cities in various fields, on March 28, 2023, a collaboration framework agreement was signed by Lyon and Barcelona. It will serve not only to formalize existing relations, but also to facilitate cooperation in new areas of common interest.

Bologna

On April 1, 2022, a second collaboration agreement was signed in Barcelona between the city councils of Bologna and Barcelona (the first agreement was signed on November 26, 2018).

Sarajevo

Information

On 4th November 2000 the twinning protocol between Barcelona and the Canton of Sarajevo was signed in Sarajevo.

The signing of this protocol represents the resuming of relations that began in 1992, in which the citizenship of Barcelona mobilised itself so that its solidarity and human aid reached the Bosnian capital, the victim of the siege imposed by the war of the Balkans.

Saint Petersburg

*This twinning has been temporarily suspended by the Barcelona City Council.

Barcelona and Saint Petersburg were twinned on 24th October 1985 with the signing of an agreement of friendship and collaboration with the then city of Leningrad. According to this agreement, both cities agreed to exchange political, cultural, sports and information delegations about the activity of the local authorities.

Montpellier

Information

Montpellier was the first city to be twinned with Barcelona, on 23rd November 1963 in Barcelona.  In 1986, on 23rd April, the two cities signed a complementary agreement in the fields of economic, scientific and technical cooperation.

Both cities share a close geographical space and they are joined by solid historical and cultural ties.
