Daytime heat alert and torrid night emergency deactivated
On Tuesday, 19 August, the emergency for torrid nights was lifted, as nighttime temperatures are expected to remain below 26°C. On Monday, 18 August, the daytime heat alert was also deactivated.
Update: 19/8/2025
During the period of the intense heat alert and hot night emergency, the Barcelona Centre for Social Urgencies and Emergencies (CUESB), home care and telecare services and municipal social services centres have conducted targeted information campaigns related to the weather risk. They have also maintained systematic monitoring of vulnerable individuals. Additional information and follow-up measures have been intensified for vulnerable groups, as is normally done by Barcelona City Council between 15 June and 15 September.
Heat Plan
Excessive and sustained heat has proven negative effects on people’s health, especially among the most vulnerable, such as the elderly, young children or those with chronic illnesses.
To prevent risk and respond effectively, the preventive phase of the Heat Plan and the network of climate shelters are activated between 15 June and 15 September. During this period, the municipal teams involved in prevention and response keep all services on standby in case specific heat alerts are issued and ensure that municipal resources are available to residents.
Climate shelters
Barcelona has a network of climate shelters to help residents cope with high temperatures. There are nearly 400 indoor and outdoor spaces, including libraries, civic centres, schools, parks and other municipal facilities. All are accessible and equipped with seating and drinking water points. Outdoor areas provide shade, while indoor spaces are air-conditioned.
The city also has over 1,740 drinking water fountains spread throughout its neighbourhoods.
