Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Hotel Guild met on Thursday to analyse the current drought situation, and to put forward measures that will need to be applied in the city when the emergency stage of the drought protocol is activated. In a meeting held at the city hall, the institutions shared their concerns and reaffirmed the current understanding of the need to continue applying policies to save water and raise awareness among local residents and people staying in the city’s hotels.

The council recognises the work the sector has done to moderate water consumption, and considers it one of the city’s essential players in the fight against the worst drought in recent decades, recognising at the same time the role of tourism as a key economic driver in Barcelona. It is for this reason that the meeting was held, to share tools and approaches, and to work on specific measures to be applied at all times, all of which entail reducing water consumption. This meeting is one of a series of sectoral meetings being held by the City Council in the context of the current drought.

For its part, the Barcelona Hotel Guild underlined the huge efforts the sector has made in recent years to reduce water consumption through saving and efficiency measures. The Guild also emphasised its full awareness of the current drought situation and the need to maintain the water-saving policies implemented in recent years, in line with the need to promote responsible and sustainable consumption.
