Committed to LGTBIQ+ Diversity

The Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism aims to advance the sustainability of tourism and the sector in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

More than 40 Companies Committed to Sustainable Tourism Participate in the LGTBIQ+ Diversity Management Workshop. The workshop on LGTBIQ+ diversity management is part of the diversity training offered under the Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism.

Barcelona is a diverse city, and events like the LGTBIQ+ Diversity Management Workshop attest to this. This is the first time such training has been conducted, with participation from over 40 companies. The training was organised by the Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Tourism Consortium, in coordination with the LGTBIQ+ Chamber and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

Nur Abellán, a researcher and lecturer at CETT-UB, an expert in gender, feminism, and LGTB tourism, led the training session. The aim was to identify potential situations of discrimination in the scope of the tourism business and propose various solutions. Attending companies left the workshop committed to implementing some of the proposed actions in their continuous improvement sustainability plans to renew their Biosphere certification, subsidised by the Barcelona City Council through the tourist tax.

Quality and Sustainability Assurance

The tourism sector companies that participated hold the Biosphere certification, awarded through the “Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism” programme, which is granted by the Barcelona City Council. This certification recognises those tourism operators who advocate a responsible and respectful management of the environment, culture, working conditions, gender equity, and social and economic return.

Through this programme, companies commit to a process of learning, advisement, and verification of sustainability commitments at economic, sociocultural, and environmental levels, as well as enhancing their networking to increase their visibility and contribute to improving the international tourism industry.

The Barcelona Commitment to Sustainable Tourism aims to advance the sustainability of tourism and the sector in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. This means the Commitment responds to both the desire to promote more mindful tourism practices by tourism operators and the wishes of visitors to travel while fully respecting the environment.
