Tourism. The conference on the circular economy in the tourism industry brought together some 75 businesses, members of the Barcelona Tourist Consortium and the Biosphere Commitment Programme.
Organised by the Barcelona Tourist Consortium with the support of the City Council, this was an event for businesses, aimed at members of the Consortium and the Biosphere Commitment Programme.
The conference on the circular economy in the tourism industry, which took place yesterday, 12 December, brought some 75 businesses together at an event that sought to promote the fundamental principles and experiences of this approach in order to guide the transition of businesses towards a reduction in resource consumption, the use of sustainable products and the extraction of maximum value from waste.
The event, organised by the Barcelona Tourist Consortium with the support of the City Council, highlighted the fundamental role played by the TechnoCampus Chair of Circular Economy and Sustainability (UPF) in facilitating the session, providing context and sound arguments on the urgent need to move towards circular and sustainable tourism models.
The event included group sessions, enabling the participating businesses to share experiences in governance and organisation, thereby paving the way for future partnerships. The joint commitment of the participating businesses to a more sustainable and efficient tourism was underscored.
The closing session was delivered by Barcelona City Council’s Economic Promotion manager, Miquel Rodríguez Planas, who remarked on the importance of the issues addressed, the undeniable contribution that tourism makes to the city and the City Council’s firm commitment to supporting the circular economy applied to tourism and sustainability.
He also announced the organisation of three new sessions in the first quarter of 2024, which will delve deeper into the projects highlighted during today’s event. These events will become work spaces for addressing crucial issues, such as construction and outfitting, food and the supply chain, and tourism services.
The success of the event and the city’s evident commitment makes Barcelona a benchmark in the implementation of circular economy practices in the tourism sector, paving the way for a more sustainable and innovative future for the tourism industry.
