The course on accessible tourism and support for people with disabilities and other diverse needs took place at the Hotel Ilunion, a perfect example of good practices in this area. Organised by the Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities, the Directorate for Tourism and the Barcelona Tourist Consortium, and held on 15 and 16 November, the course was supported by ONCE, ECOM, ACAPPS, DINCAT, FESOCA and FSMCAT.
The goals of the course were to introduce the concept of accessible tourism, raise awareness among professionals from the tourism sector on the need to improve service for this group, train people to attend to these visitors appropriately, and highlight the tools currently available on the market for businesses to promote this type of tourism.
The Directorate for Tourism emphasised that in recent years, Barcelona has made a significant effort to do away with architectural barriers and become an accessible city, and that many tourist establishments such as museums, cultural centres, accommodation and restaurants have adapted their premises to take into account functional diversity in society.
The two-day course included practical workshops by participating organisations, and examples of good practices implemented by on Ilunion, the Monastery of Pedralbes and the Catalan Parkinson’s Association.
