Montjuïc Park is making progress in improving accessibility to the mountain. On October 24, work began to replace the 22 escalators with the aim of facilitating movement for the public. Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM) is the promoter of the project, which has a budget of 7.8 million euros – of which 3.6 million come from Next Generation EU Funds, as part of the Barcelona Tourism Sustainability Strategy – and will be carried out in different phases until its completion, scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

The first escalators to be replaced are those located on Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana, which provide access to the Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier Promenade. In this section, the new model of escalators will be installed, which is more efficient and energy-sustainable, and includes a remote control and monitoring system to optimize its operation and ensure its availability.
The schedule for the renewal of the remaining escalator sections will take into account the programming of Montjuïc Park and the Olympic Ring to minimize disruption to visitors during periods of higher activity.
On the other hand, simultaneous work will be avoided on the most heavily used escalators, such as those located on Avenida Reina María Cristina and those providing access to the MNAC and the Olympic Ring, in order to guarantee alternative routes for visitors.

Over 30 million uses
Each year, 30 million uses of the escalators are recorded by visitors who access Montjuïc Park to attend events, visit cultural spaces, or engage in sports, among other activities.
The new escalators are designed with sustainability, safety, and durability in mind. With their installation, Montjuïc Park will improve accessibility to the mountain and reduce its carbon footprint.
