Shenzhen Airlines has opened a new direct route with the Chinese city in order to meet the high demand for this Asian destination.

The main objective of the Barcelona Air Routes Development Committee (CDRA) 2021-2024 Strategic Plan is to recover the routes/companies that operated prior to the pandemic and to increase the capacity of some existing destinations with a great deal of demand but in short supply, as well as increasing the number of new routes to new destinations.

The recovery and creation of new routes to Asia is fundamental for the CDRA, which seeks to promote Barcelona’s connectivity and its synergies with industry and companies, besides improving the link between Catalonia and China. In fact, demand was quite high in 2019, exceeding 433,492 indirect passengers by origin/destination (O&D) between Barcelona and China.

With China closed until a few months ago, it has been a great challenge to recover routes and create new ones from JT Barcelona el Prat airport. Shenzhen Airlines has confidence in Barcelona and trusts the city, and we hope that it will soon be able to grow by increasing its frequencies.

Barcelona City Council representatives, on behalf of the CDRA, have met local government and company representatives in Shenzhen on various occasions since 2017 and they have worked together to achieve this route.

The Barcelona – Shenzhen route that started this week demonstrates Shenzhen Airlines’ interest in the Catalan market . It will operate twice a week,on Mondays and Fridays, with an Airbus 330 offering three classes of service: Business, Premium Economy and Economy.

From JT Barcelona el Prat airport, flights take off at 11.30 a.m. to arrive at Shenzhen airport at 7.00 a.m. the following day. The return flights will leave Shenzhen at 00.05 to land in the Catalan capital at 8.05 in the morning of the same day.

These schedules have been designed to benefit both business and leisure travellers with connections within China as well as international connections to major Asian cities.

Shenzhen Airlines offers routes to Asia, North America and Europe. Currently, apart from Barcelona, it only operates in London in Europe.
