Report on the options for improving Prat Josep Taradellas airport
Environment. A report is presented by Barcelona Regional to assess the options for improving Prat Josep Tarradellas airport, within the context of the climate emergency and the post-Covid era.
The report assesses various options for the future of the airport within the current context of climate change and the post-pandemic era. The document has been produced over the last year and also looks at the environmental effects for the airport and the surrounding area.
The report sets out the benefits and drawbacks, as well as the main environmental effects, of five proposals to improve the infrastructure:
- A model for optimising the current runways without taking up more surface space.
- The proposal from AENA, which seeks to extend the third runway at the airport to allow it to be used by large aircraft, minimising the effects of noise and requiring low investment.
- The construction of a fourth runway or even a fifth runway above the sea.
- An airport system for Barcelona-Girona where no runway extension is needed at the airport, preserving the natural spaces in the area and using the high-speed rail link.
- Maintaining the current area with improvements to operations and infrastructure and the substitution of short flights, with a low environmental impact.
The document is open to anybody wishing to consult it and will be used in the debate sessions on the future of the airport as a tool for analysing the different options available.
