Barcelona will be present at WorldPride 2025, which is on in Washington DC until 8 June. A Catalan delegation has travelled to the US capital to present Barcelona’s bid to host the 2030 World Pride celebrations.
The initiative is led by Pride Barcelona, a Catalonia LGBTI+ Chamber member organisation. The city’s bid is a coordinated effort involving Barcelona City Council, the Catalan government’s Ministry for Equality and Feminism and the Spanish Ministry of Equality. The three institutions have joined forces for this project to turn Barcelona into a role-model in the fight for LGBTI+ rights at a time when hate speech is on the rise.
WorldPride is an event authorised by InterPride, which promotes visibility and awareness of the LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) community internationally. The event includes parades, marches, festivals and other activities, such as a human rights conference.
Barcelona’s bid
The vice-chair of the Catalonia LGBTIQ+ Chamber and Pride Barcelona, Maria Giralt; the commissioner for Policies on Children, Adolescents, Young People and the LGBTI Community at Barcelona City Council, Javier Rodríguez; the director-general for LGBTI+ Public Policies at the Government of Catalonia, Alberto Lacasta; the director-general for Real and Effective LGBTI+ Equality, Julio del Valle, and representatives from the Catalan Tourism Agency and Turespaña kicked off their schedule at the Spanish Embassy in the United States, where they presented the Barcelona WorldPride 2030 project.
The delegation’s schedule includes a meeting with Washington DC City Council, a visit to the city’s LGBTI centre and participation in a human rights conference as part of the programme for WorldPride 2025. Various bilateral meetings with other LGBTI organisations taking part in the event have also been planned.
Barcelona’s bid will also be present at the main WorldPride event in Washington, the parade through the streets of the US capital, with a float and an information stand to introduce the project aimed at turning the Catalan capital into the heart of the LGBTI+ community in 2030.
